The Humane Society of Atchison, Inc. is recognized as a tax exempt organization under Section 501 (C3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It is incorporated under Kansas Law as a nonprofit corporation and is governed by the Board of Directors

The Humane Society of Atchison is a  low-kill shelter, using euthanasia for aggression, long term illness, or serious injury.   Founded in November 1991, the new shelter facility opened on April Fools' Day, 2000.  On that day, the small overworked staff moved into an unfinished building with no bathroom.   Ten years later many finishing touches have yet to be applied, but the bathroom works.

OUR MISSION is to protect animals from neglect, abuse, and exploitation; to adopt animals into loving homes; to reduce pet overpopulation through education and an active spay/neuter program; to advocate for their welfare through programs and services that mutually benefit animals and people, as well as promote awareness and compassion for all animal life.

"I am in favor of animals' rights as well as human rights.  That is the way of the whole human being." ~ ABRAHAM LINCOLN
