2005 through 2008, the Humane Society of Atchison participated in neutering 863 dogs and 953 cats.

A single pair of cats can produce over 100 offspring in 7 years.  Had the 953 recently neutered cats been allowed to reproduce, Atchison could be overrun with 95,000 additional cats sometime in 2015.

SAVE LIVES
 SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PETS!
-----------
More than -----------
4,000,000 good dogs & cats
 are killed every year
because there aren't enough homes for them.

  • Greatly reduces or eliminates the incidence of several serious health problems such as  uterine, ovarian, breast and testicular cancer and prostate disease.
  • Often improves pets' behavior as they are less likely to want to roam,
can become more cooperative and affectionate companions.

  • Neutering tomcats makes them much less likely to "spray".

  • Generally leads to a longer, happier life for your pet.

  • Neutered dogs are less likely to bite.

We are fortunate to have a number of excellent veterinarians in our community. We highly recommend their services!

The Humane Society of Atchison's Snip-n-Clip Express is a convenient, low-cost option for those who have demanding schedules and/or limited finances.  Once a month, President Craig Kew takes a pack of dogs and a clutter of cats--a truck load-- to get spayed or neutered.

Participation is easy! Stop by or call to make your pet's reservation. Pre-payment is required.  On his assigned day, bring your pet to the shelter between 7:00 and 7:30 AM.  Pick him up between 6:00 and 6:30 PM.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PET AFTER SURGERY

The cost of spaying or neutering a pet is less than the cost of raising puppies or kittens for a year.*

  • A male cat  can begin mating when he is between 7 & 10 months old.
  • A female cat can begin mating when she is between 5 & 9 months old.
  • The length of a cat's pregnancy is 58-65 days.
  • A female cat can have 29 litters in 10 years.
  • Over 70% of all cats brought into our nation's animal pounds & shelters are killed.
  • A female cat can have 3-5 litters per year.
  • A cat may become pregnant while nursing her current litter.
  • A female cat may be spayed when she weighs about 4 lbs.
  • The average number of litters a fertile cat produces is one to two a year; average number of kittens is 4-6 per litter*
  • 75% of surplus cats come from breeding by stray cats

  • A female dog can begin mating when she is 7-8 months old, earlier in smaller dogs.
  • A male dog can begin mating at about 5 months.
  • The female dog is in heat twice a year for 5-15 days each time.
  • Dog Litter size by breed.
  • The average size of a litter of puppies is 6.
  • The normal dog gestation period is 9 weeks (63 days)
  • While each puppy has only 1 father, different male dogs can sire different puppies in the same litter.
  • One female dog in her lifetime can produce 80 puppies potentially resulting in 67,000 dogs in 6 years time.

To end  HOMELESSNESS OF DOGS & CATS in the United States,
each human being would need to own  6 DOGS AND 9 CATS.
